Why the AI doom and the AI hype are both wrong

The world is holding two contradictory AI beliefs at once...

1) AI isn’t strong enough to justify the massive infrastructure spending that all of the big AI companies are emptying their wallets on right now. And at the same time,

2) AI is so powerful it will destroy incumbents across entire industries and lead to instantaneous workforce collapse.

Both of those angles can’t be true at the same time.

In my video essay this week, I work through why the real story is likely messier, and more uneven than either the AI doomers or the techno-optimists want to admit.

I also talk through a framework for understanding why AI at the macro level, workforce and economic disruption still feels and looks modest despite the extraordinary capabilities of the technology.

(As is so often the case, the punch line is that this isn’t a technology problem. It’s a people challenge.)
