AI just got Excel and data-work superpowers

Written by Mark Laurence | Sep 18, 2025 8:00:57 AM

For those of you who work with data and/or spreadsheets regularly, something huge just happened for you.

Claude can now create, edit, and refine Excel sheets and workbooks with many hundreds of formulas, clean formatting, and linked tabs... the kind of output that usually takes an analyst team days.

This isn’t just an AI feature update though, it’s one of those AI step changes that disrupts whole roles and industries overnight. It's a clear marker that a huge part of so many people's work, all around the world, has crossed another line with AI. The leap is so sharp that the top-tier AI commentators I follow and respect are calling it a genuine superpower for working with data.

But as big as the news is from Claude, it's actually only part of an even bigger story... the "step-change pace" of AI advancement, and how it is causing a rapid widening of the AI capability-adoption gap. I explain both those concepts in the video essay.

Give it a watch... this is definitely one you’ll want to talk about with your team.
